TOLEDO, OH- May 17th 2014- After-School All-Stars (ASAS) Ohio will run for fitness and health on Saturday, May 17th, 2014 at the old Libbey High School track (Hawley & Western).The event,hosted by After-School All-Stars Ohio, is for students, faculty and community members to participate in a Springtime run or walk. A non-perishable food item is requested from all participants. Collected items will be donated to the SeaGate Food Bank. On-Site registration will open at 8a.m. All minors must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.
The event is expecting more than 100 runners/walkers to re-establish the Libbey High School track as a reinvigorated venue for running and walking. Students and faculty from Walbridge School and Birmingham School will be participating as well as members from the community.Volunteers will be officiating and monitoring course safety and will facilitate the distribution of awards to all participants.
The Toledo After-School All-Stars’ 2nd Annual 5K run continues the effort of being an incentive for staying fit and healthy through exercise and eating well. Many of the runners will be attempting their first race. One student exclaimed, “I might not win it, but I am here to finish!” Eileen Kerner, Associate Director for After-School All-Stars Toledo, stated, “Encouraging students to take control of their health and fitness is a long-term solution to a healthier community!”
After-School All-Stars is a free after-school program offered to students at Walbridge Elementary and Birmingham Elementary of the Toledo Public School system (TPS).During the academic year, After-School All-Stars provides an integrated program incorporating academic support, enrichment opportunities and health/fitness instruction. This year, more than 30,000 program hours were provided to participating students in Toledo.
